We’re honored to support the annual Thanksgiving meal for more than 250 Veterans and their families at the Washoe County Senior Center. It was a day filled with gratitude, good food, and even better conversations as we came together to thank our Veterans for their service.
More than 250 Veterans and their families gathered at the Washoe County Senior Center to eat an early Thanksgiving meal courtesy of several local businesses and organizations.
BJ’s Barbeque prepared the meal of turkey, potatoes, stuffing and the rest of the traditional Thanksgiving fare.
Those people serving the Veterans are from the Reno Corvette Club.
With such a large crowd it was all hands-on deck.
But those who came to help say they were more than willing to lend a helping hand.
“I knew it was above and beyond fabulous,” says Katie Hurst, with St Mary’s Hospice of Northern Nevada. “And being in hospice business it is really important to reach out to those who are on this side of their journey. And we couldn’t find a better calling.”
Plenty of donations came in to pay for the meal.
For those who bought a “Community 4 Veterans” raffle ticket last summer in front of the Sportsman’s Warehouse, this is where some of that money went.
This was the largest attended Thanksgiving Event for Veterans thus far at the Washoe County Senior Center.
It’s not just about the food for these men and women and their families.
“They are more appreciative of being able to get together and meet and share stories,” says Frank Greenwood, with Community 4 Veterans. “A lot of conversation is going on here that wouldn’t happen otherwise.”
Good conversation, a good meal, there’s a lot to be thankful for.
“Anyone who treats me nice, and all these people and it is such a beautiful thing,” says Veteran John McGovern.
This won’t be the last time Veterans get together for the holidays. Another meal is planned for Christmas on December 19th at the Washoe County Senior Center.
